Active Listening for Beginners: Hearing More in Music You Already Know
Most music is heard while doing something else. Giving a song your full attention, even once, changes what you hear in it.
What active listening means here
The term active listening comes from communication: deliberately engaging with what someone is saying. Applied to music, it means listening as the main activity, not as background.
A first exercise
- Pick a song you know well.
- Listen once following only the bass line.
- Listen again following only the drums.
- Listen a third time to everything, and notice what changed.
Questions to ask
- Where is each instrument placed, left, right or centre?
- When does the song get bigger, and what makes it bigger?
- What happens just before the chorus?
Give it the right setting
Quiet room, decent headphones or speakers and no screen. Fifteen minutes of focused listening teaches more than hours of half-listening.
Next: headphones or speakers.
